SBL W12

This week at SBL I had a reliever in my focus childs class, was interesting to see kids that i know react to a different teaching style. I also taught a guided reading and a shared writing lesson to a group of 7 students including my focus child.

Highlights
got to see a reliever new to the school and class in action, find out about their resourses and what is expected from them.
Teaching my guided reading lesson. i was well prepard for this, had to deal with one girls behavioural issue.
Taught my first lesson in shared writing with no spelling mistakes! For anyone that knows how terrible i am at spelling this is amazing! i am working hard at learning to spell, however i had a dictionary on hand just incase. i think i also hit my learning intensions! i feel really good. same girl played up a bit. I decided to teach lesson out side.
I think the group responds to me well as after the lesson they asked if they can do it again next week with me. Makes me feel good. I just hope they actually learn something from it. I recorded both lessons to do futher reflection on my teacher at home and fill in my evaluation.
spending one on one time with a student that struggles with writing, hearing his ideas and watching him sound out the sounds of words and writing a really cool story. reminds me why i want to be a teacher.
i have developed a teacher voice. haha makes me laugh as it is quite serious and firm when someone is misbehaving. its very not like me but i sort of like it. when i use it the kids know to stop doing what they are doing.

Challenges
had one girl tear up because i told her she wasnt being respectful during the lesson. that wasnt fun but we worked it out then she was fine.
the second lesson i had with her she still misbehaved. She apoligised to me after the lesson. I said that its not accecptible and that if she wants to work in the group again she needs to prove to me that she can be a team player.
time management to get lessons done. in both my guided reading and shared writing i went over in time. i wanted both lessons to be 20mins but ended up being longer due to too much student discussion and me being to focused on covering every teaching point in depth.

What I learnt.
That good kids can play up for teachers they dont have a relationship with.
That very few children actually like reading and writing.
that control of a class is key to productivity! not a lot got done while the class was running riot.
that teaching a group isnt scary! they dont know that i am nervous or that i dont really know what im talking about, they listen to me. but i also think this is because the students in this class have developed a good relationship with me, and see me as a second teacher in their class. at this stage i think i will ask my AT if i can take a couple of full class lessons in practicum. my planning is easy to follow and i think i am gaining confidence in being infront of the kids.

was an unorganised class for the two days but i got a lot out of it. personal refelction being the most important, and feeling successful.

SBL W11

This week I had a really great week at SBL. Had a class meeting on the Tuesday was a bit of a pain but the content was really relevant. I left feeling good on Wednesday.

Highlights
I have a bond with the kids in this class, they feel really comfortable with me there, they always ask me to hellp them or read with them. its just really cool.
reading to the whole class for the two days, reading books id never read and the kids still being engaged and interested helped build my confidence doing whole class activities.
Classroom teacher asked me if i wanted to take some handwriting on the board, he obvously thinks I am ready to take small steps towards teaching a whole class which is excitiing.

Challenges
Running record, it was also a highlight. Feel like I did my first bit of what ill be doing as a teacher. Felt proud that it was successful, learnt from it doing.
Finding a book for my guided reading lesson. So many to choose from.

What I Learnt.
to take any oppertunity that gets thrown at you, thats how you learn and grow.
I saw a really cool group activity for reading called fantastic facts, Ill be puting that in my eport to ideas in the classroom.

looking forward to next week when i get to take two shared wiriting lessons. Planning all weekend! The life of a teacher. :)

SBL W10

This week is the first week that I have felt really stressed out at SBL. I was in two completely different year level classes both in which I didn't really enjoy. My teacher was absent that my focus child is in for an assessment so I have no information on that. All feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Highlights
I had some cool chats with some kids. Read some picture books to a few in the class, building confidence with that.
Felt like I opened up to the MT and had a good conversation with her.
Had duty with a young teacher and spoke to her about starting off as a new teacher and learning. She gave me some good things to look forward too as all I. See now is 3 years of training.possibly not passing. Just so over whelmed.

Challenges
New entrant class, the kids were just awall the whole day. Is was mentally and physically draining. It's 100% not my thing. The MT said that that's what she used to think too till she taught them. At this point I'm not interested in the just 5yr olds. The teacher wasn't really engaging and I felt like a burden more than a help. Didn't really have any guidance on what I was doing all day. Felt like crying when I left school.
Year 5's. Male teacher. Very tech with Apple TV. I enjoyed that aspect of his class. The children where fine. Had a couple in the class with learning difficulties, one girl with aspergers. Really interesting to learn about her learning. I would find that an issue to over come as a teacher, he handles her well. Again I felt awkward with the teacher. Just didn't really make a connection.
I feel I don't know enough to be a teacher right now. So much self doubt is running through my veins, I don't even know if I will pass the last assessment and we have 3 more on the go.

What I learnt
That someday days as a teacher a just right offs. What learning was done in the classes that I was in?
The seniors scare me so much, I'm hoping I am in a year 3 or 4 class for practicum.

This week at SBL I actually thought to myself what the heck am I up too? And I realised that if I ever have any student teachers come into my class I will be open and inviting and give them a bit of direction to what is going on. It's horrible not knowing what I can and can't do. It makes me feel so nervous and that's when I make mistakes. I know that being with kids is my passion and I will complete this degree. At this point I am just like what the heck is going on. Haha. I'll get through it. I always do.

SBL WK 9.

This week I only had one day at SBL. I spent the whole day in one class room from 8.45am till 3pm. Really liked that.

 Highlights
Listening to the kids news in the morning. Very entertaining and really about nothing. Makes me laugh.
Being asked random questions and having an intellectual conversation with a 7yr old. Just makes me think wow! Where do these kids hear thus stuff? Brought smiles to my face.
Being in a class for the whole day was fantastic.

Challenges
Helping kids with dictionaries. This was a challenge. I was in a year 3/4 class and I was amazed at how many children couldn't look up a word even when given the first 3 letters. Shocking. In the class I was in the teacher has done a great job of mixing up the abilities on the tables and have two MKO's in spelling on each table, the other children can ask these kids who are great spellers for the first three letters of a word then they have to look it up. I think it's a great idea and worked really well. Only down fall was the dictionary skills. Teacher knows this and is working on it. But great to see self editing.

What I learnt
That sometimes lessons take longer than expected, and you can't always fit everything in. That it's ok and don't stress about it. Being a teacher you must be flexible.
How a day runs from start to finish.
That this class room teacher relies on parent help for reading and writing, spelling testing.
